The Cost of Addiction
The estimated cost of trafficking and drug abuse in this country is nearly half a trillion dollars every year including health care related treatments, crime related costs, and loss of productivity. With over 23 million Americans suffering from alcohol and drug addiction, the economic and cultural costs can not be sustained.
Addiction in Real Numbers
- 2.9 million people tried illicit drugs in 2008. 8,000 people a day are introduced to illicit drug use.
- 1 in 10 individuals suffering from addiction will receive treatment.
- 14% of those admitted to hospitals suffer from alcohol/drug addiction disorders.
- 70% of inmates in state prisons used illegal drugs regularly.
- The economic burden in the U.S. for addiction is two times that of any other disease affecting the brain.
- More than one in eight Medicaid beneficiaries is substance dependent. Higher costs of care were attributed to those who suffer from addiction.
- More than 1.7 million dollars are spent each year on emergency room visits due to drug misuse and abuse.
- Every dollar invested in treatment saves:
- $4-7 in reduction in drug related crimes
- $3-5 reduction in emergency room care
- $4 reduction in welfare and child welfare costs among women
- $7 increase in productivity
After several decades of research, it is clear that addiction is a chronic disease that has a profound impact upon the brain. Some of the brain damage and changes that occur during active addiction can be reversed or healed. During the development of active addiction and while the condition is not treated, the emotional, physical, and financial costs remain high.
Yet, data also indicates that relapse for other diseases is considered normal and that treatment protocols are constantly being reevaluated. Unfortunately, with addiction there is an overwhelming expectation that treatment one time is enough to cure addiction and the negative thinking that goes with addiction, as well as the behaviors that developed during addiction.
Despite the rate of relapse, research also demonstrates that addiction treatment, which may include medication as well as a variety of therapies like diabetes treatment, works.
